Henry has been a partner at an international law firm as well as major law firms in Singapore. He has more than 25+ years’ experience in commercial dispute and alternative dispute resolution work.
Henry specialises in commercial dispute resolution work, with a niche practice in regulatory, disciplinary and inquiry proceedings. His practice covers a wide spectrum of work and Henry’s depth of experience includes international and domestic arbitration, litigation, mediation, inquiries as well as adjudication under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act.
He has established a reputation in the industry as a commercially savvy and effective lawyer. Henry has a good grasp of issues as well as being able to provide viable commercial solutions. In the courtroom or before an arbitral tribunal, he is recognised as being quick-witted, passionate and a fiery advocate.
Henry is a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb) and Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution (AIADR), appointed as an arbitrator on LSAS Panel of Arbitrators, SIArb and AIADR. He is also a mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre as well as the Law Society Mediation Scheme and AIADR. Henry also actively sits as an adjudicator and neutral evaluator with Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre (FIDReC).
Henry has authored several publications relating to shipping and admiralty, as well as Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act. He is recognised by Legal 500 Asia Pacific as having a breadth of knowledge and acumen in commercial matters.
WORK HIGHLIGHTS, representing:
- The Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board, Singapore Nursing Board, Singapore Medical Council, Optometrists & Opticians Board and Singapore Dental Council, as legal assessor and consultant. Cases range from professional misconduct or negligence to breach of the Ethical Code and Regulations.
- The Energy Market Authority and Council for Estate Agencies as prosecutor for regulatory and statutory breaches.
- Clients in various court proceedings for criminal matters, including charges by Public Utilities Board, Ministry of Manpower, National Environment Agency, Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority and Central Provident Fund Board.
- A major mechanical and electrical contractor in court, adjudication and arbitration proceedings pertaining to disputes arising out of the construction of Jewel Changi Airport, a SGD 1.7 billion retail and mixed development.
- A SGX listed offshore support vessel company with operations in various jurisdictions such as Singapore, China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Mexico in many arbitration and court proceedings. This includes successfully acting in a landmark case in 2023 where the approach to defining a vessel under the High Court (Admiralty Jurisdiction) Act 1961 was enunciated.
- Several listed construction companies in various court proceedings, arbitrations, adjudications and mediations pertaining to, inter alia, payment disputes and defects in residential and commercial developments. These include developments such as Affinity, Bartley Ridge, Centro, Defu Industrial City, Eco-Tech@Sunview, Florence Residences, Fourth Avenue Residences, Hedges Park, Inflora, Jewel Changi Airport, Jovell, Juniper, KAP Residences, Mandai Foodlink, Martin Modern, Midtown Commercial and Residences, Penrose, Scala, Skies Miltonia, Spottiswoode Suites, T Space, Thomson Grand and Waterfront Isle.
- Significant shareholders of a listed company in a ownership dispute where the claim exceeds SGD 7 million. This case involves many complex issues including alleged resulting and implied trust as well as illegality and money laundering.
- A distress fund based in Europe in SIAC arbitration in a claim exceeding USD 18 million regarding the issuance and redemption of bonds by an Indonesian poultry conglomerate. Successfully obtained an arbitral award for the amount claimed plus costs.
- A listed OSV company in various matters, including HKIAC arbitration against a China state owned entity in a claim exceeding USD 50 million pertaining to defects and non-conformity of specifications of a vessel.
